Preparing for fatherhood

From the Family learning hub

Before children arrive, settle the things that become much harder afterwards: how money is handled, how you argue, what support you have, and what kind of father you intend to be.

Part 01

The lesson

Talk explicitly with your partner about division of nights, work and household load. Assumptions made silently in month one become resentments by year three.

Reflection

Questions to sit with

  1. 01What will your children say about you when they are forty?
  2. 02When did your child last see you admit you were wrong?
  3. 03Is your family managing your moods?

Put it into practice

Action points

  1. 01Spend 30 uninterrupted minutes with your child today — no phone, their choice of activity.
  2. 02Ask your child what they think makes a good father. Listen without correcting the answer.
