Emotional maturity is feeling something fully and still choosing your response. Immaturity looks like two extremes: exploding outward, or shutting down and going cold. Both make you unsafe to be close to.
Part 01
The lesson
The skill is naming the emotion before acting on it — 'I'm embarrassed', 'I'm exhausted', 'I feel disrespected'. Naming slows the reaction and usually reveals the real issue, which is rarely the thing you were about to argue about.
Part 02
In practice
You snap at your partner over the dishes. The dishes are not the problem. Being overlooked at work all week is the problem, and it needs saying out loud rather than leaking sideways.
Reflection
Questions to sit with
- 01Do your private decisions match the man you present publicly?
- 02What do you do when nobody is watching?
- 03Can people depend on your word?
Put it into practice
Action points
- 01For seven days, write down every commitment you make out loud, and mark each one kept or broken. Read the list at the end of the week without excuses.
- 02Pick one habit you have avoided and shrink it until it takes under five minutes. Do it daily for two weeks before making it bigger.
