Discipline

From the Character learning hub

Discipline is the ability to do what you decided to do after the feeling that inspired the decision has gone. It is not intensity, and it is not punishment. Men who rely on motivation perform in bursts; men who rely on discipline perform consistently.

Part 01

The lesson

Build it structurally rather than emotionally. Reduce the number of decisions you have to make: fixed wake time, a short written plan for the day, the gym bag packed the night before. Then start absurdly small — small enough that skipping it would be embarrassing — and protect the streak more than the size of the effort.

Part 02

In practice

A man who wants to read more sets the target at four pages a night, not a book a week. Four pages survive a bad day. A book a week collapses on the first one.

Reflection

Questions to sit with

  1. 01Do your private decisions match the man you present publicly?
  2. 02What do you do when nobody is watching?
  3. 03Can people depend on your word?

Put it into practice

Action points

  1. 01For seven days, write down every commitment you make out loud, and mark each one kept or broken. Read the list at the end of the week without excuses.
  2. 02Pick one habit you have avoided and shrink it until it takes under five minutes. Do it daily for two weeks before making it bigger.
